Often we are hired to create custom solutions for interiors in New York City, particularly where size or shape is an issue.  The natural wood slabs are a great way to accentuate a clean contemporary space with something new and organic.  This particular piece of wood is ash with a hand polish finish which highlights the natural color of the wood.  We offer installation and design of the organic slabs in virtually any wood type for dining tables, consoles, desks, coffee tables, side tables and kitchen tables.

THOMAS HOPE TABLE DESIGN

Pier table by Thomas Hope

Victoria & Albert Museum

As furniture makers we often look at iconic furniture pieces for inspiration and sometimes assistance with design issues prior to production.   This is a giltwood Pier table designed by Thomas Hope during the English Regency Revival period (circa 1800). Inspired by the Ancient Greek and Roman design, the table contains four carytids and above them are four medallions representing the gods of night and sleep.  The carytids, according to Hope, represent the four parts of the day.  The top is made out of a black marble slab.  Hope’s used symbolic ornaments in his pieces to influence designers, clients and other craftsmen.  Hope used giltwood in much of his furniture to contrast with the often colorful interior decoration of the time period.

INCREASING POPULARITY OF CUSTOM FURNITURE

By | April 20th, 2011|all, Consoles Tables, Entry, French Hand Polish|

Great article on the Wall Street Journal today about custom handmade furniture. The vast majority of furniture related products in stores is mass produced and machine made, even in many of the supposed “higher end” retail stores.  Machine made furniture is so prevalent unless people have antiques they often are unaware of the enormous difference in quality between handmade and machine made furniture.  With high end wood custom furniture hardware and screws will be rarely if at all visible and more often solid wood will be used.  Within the custom wood furniture production world there is a wide range of talent, from entry level woodmakers  to many intermediate to few master craftsman furniture makers.contemporary modern furniture

Jules Leleu credenza This is a space designed by BAR Architects and was featured in the last month’s issue of Architectural Digest. The credenza by Jules Leleu is a nice, warm accent to the modern white interior. There is a great article about Jules Leleu in the New York Times if you would like to learn more about him

HIGH GLOSS LACQUER ENTRYWAY TABLE

By | March 17th, 2011|all, Consoles Tables, Contemporary, Entry, Lacquer furniture, Lacquer Furniture NYC, Living Space, Side tables, Store, Tables|

Below left is the inspiration image a client provided us for a custom high gloss lacquer entryway table he wanted designed for his residence. Below right is the completed custom lacquer version by ERA Interiors. Usually we’ll begin with a shop
drawing
of the furniture and go over the specifications, hardware and dimensions prior to
production. If you saw something in a store and it’s not perfect, having the image is a very
helpful way to start for custom furniture. With larger projects, especially tables over 10′ or
over sized credenzas, if the vendor is local we’ll often send someone to inspect the piece of
furniture prior to production.

There are many ways to discern whether or not a piece of furniture is machine made
(almost always in larger or well known stores with mass produced products). In addition to
the materials used often you can tell visually if you can see the hardware, screws or gaps
between the edges of wood. If someone is trying to sell something as “vintage” or
“handmade” it’s worth it to look underneath for some of these tell tale signs.

CUSTOM LACQUER FURNITURE

By | March 11th, 2011|all, Consoles Tables, Contemporary, Designs, Entry, Lacquer furniture, Lacquer Furniture NYC, Living Space, Store, Tables|

custom lacquer furnitureCustom, modular lacquer furniture is popular in New York City especially because of the range of sizes rooms have in apartments, coops, brownstones and lofts.  Hallways or different areas in interiors can often accommodate narrow consoles perhaps with drawers, lacquer benches with storage inside, nightstands or center tables.  One of the issues with much of the contemporary lacquer furniture (that include storage options) found in stores that mass produce it by machine is it comes in standard sizes and tends to have a utilitarian feel.  Custom lacquer handmade furniture looks much different.  It is similar to comparing a black lacquer steinway grand piano to a machine made casio keyboard.  Everything from the durability to flexibility to resale value should be considered.

There are the types of finish (matte, semi gloss, high gloss), hardware, etc. to consider as well.

WHITE LACQUER CONSOLE

By | December 19th, 2010|all, Consoles Tables, Contemporary, Designs, Entry, Lacquer furniture|

Here is a shop drawing of a custom made  console we are creating for a client. For this project the client found a console with a clean contemporary design but wanted a different size. The console piece found in the store was too deep and the client wanted a different finish.  Shop drawings are essential to get an idea of exactly how a piece of furniture will look with it’s size and dimensions.

Custom solid maple console

By | November 17th, 2010|all, Art Deco, Consoles Tables, Contemporary, Designs, Entry, French Hand Polish, Reproduction|

This is a solid maple custom console drawn from the inspiration image on the right. It’s a contemporary piece with elements of Art Deco. Custom designed consoles for entryways are popular because of the variation of sizes and shapes of foyers, particularly for brownstones, pre-war apartments and carriage houses in New York City.

Wall mounted demilune console

Biedermeier demilune console tableThis demilune console table is a great example of furniture created during the Biedermeier period from 1800’s.  The console’s clean lines are accentuated by the rich wood grain of walnut veneer which adorns this piece of furniture creating an elegant look. The Biedermeier furniture style was popular in the Northern part of Europe and some of the original pieces date back to the early 1800’s.  This style of furniture is generally costly due to the use of veneering, the hand french polish finishing technique utilized, and the high skill needed to create Biedermeier furniture. The presence of the organic curved support is a sign that this design dates from the later part of the Biedermeier period.

Glasgow console table

By | August 13th, 2010|all, Consoles Tables, Designs, Entry, Lacquer furniture, Living Space|

handmade_custom_furniture_glasglow_console This console table features simple lines which define its flat white planes. Its design was inspired by the Glasgow style from the 1890’s.  The table incorporates the characteristic rectilinear symmetry with hard-edged angular elements illustrative of the Glasgow period.   This handmade custom console table uses vertical lines which are held together by a curvilinear base element that helps support the structure.
