CUSTOM X BASE DINING TABLE

By | May 14th, 2011|all, Designs, Dining Space, Dining Tables, Ebonizedwood finish, Entry, Kitchen, Living Space, Side tables, Tables|

Inspiration images for custom furniture are often drawn from past designs as well as images of furniture pieces in existing spaces. This living room displays the inspiration image for a custom x base breakfast table we are creating. The original design featured here has a black ebonized finish, a brass metal inlay, brass feet and a parchment top . The new x base design we are creating  is being made out of mahogany wood and will have a hand polish finish, steel feet and steel inlay. We’ve created similar designs incorporating the x base in a desk, an x base bench and a stool with the x base.  Here are several other versions of the x base desk.

BIEDERMEIER DINING TABLE

By | May 12th, 2011|Center table, Dining Space, Dining Tables, Living Space, Side tables, Tables|

We’ve created custom biedermeier dining tables over the years for clients.  Biedermeier furniture was created from 1805 to 1850 and was favored by the wealthy middle classes in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Scandinavia. A principle component often cited for this Australian historical style it tends to be lighter and designed for livability and private residences.  These inspiration images were sent to us by an architect currently drawing up restoration plans for a Brownstone townhouse in Murray Hill.  The client would like to have a custom beidermeier dining table created to draw from elements of each of these tables and to match with the existing (and to be restored) moldings in the brownstone.  This project is a classic example of hiring a custom furniture maker to build a piece of furniture which simply does not exist anywhere.  Even if the client were able to find something close online or from an antique dealer, invariably there would be some level of restoration and chance taken to see if it would work in the space.

HIGH GLOSS LACQUER ENTRYWAY TABLE

Below left is the inspiration image a client provided us for a custom high gloss lacquer entryway table he wanted designed for his residence. Below right is the completed custom lacquer version by ERA Interiors. Usually we’ll begin with a shop
drawing
of the furniture and go over the specifications, hardware and dimensions prior to
production. If you saw something in a store and it’s not perfect, having the image is a very
helpful way to start for custom furniture. With larger projects, especially tables over 10′ or
over sized credenzas, if the vendor is local we’ll often send someone to inspect the piece of
furniture prior to production.

There are many ways to discern whether or not a piece of furniture is machine made
(almost always in larger or well known stores with mass produced products). In addition to
the materials used often you can tell visually if you can see the hardware, screws or gaps
between the edges of wood. If someone is trying to sell something as “vintage” or
“handmade” it’s worth it to look underneath for some of these tell tale signs.

BIEDERMEIER CENTER TABLE

By | November 25th, 2010|all, Biedermeier, Center table, Dining Space, Living Space, Reproduction, Side tables, Tables|

This is a biedermeier center table we completed for a client with a pre-war Upper East Side three bedroom apartment.  They had a mix of furniture styles and wanted a simple, modern center table for the living room.  They had a nice Biedermeier sofa (pictured left) so matching the table while not overtaking the other elements of the room was essential.  The interior designer requested a table which would fit nicely into the left hand corner of the space.  This is a simple round center table based on a 19th century Austrian Biedermeier design and measures 30″ high with a diameter of 31″.

Biedermeier Side Table

By | November 19th, 2010|all, Biedermeier, Living Space, ROOM, Side tables, STYLES, Tables|

This is a pair of Biedermeier side tables we created for a client last summer who has a beautiful duplex on the Upper West Side overlooking the Hudson river.  The Bidermeier style encompasses an enormous range of eras from clean lines and mostly functional elements to highly intricate and ornate furniture.  This particular piece has canted sabre legs with a black lacquer base and is made out of mahogany.  It’s a variation on an antique the client saw at a dealer’s show in Westchester.  When you don’t completely love an antique it’s often hard to justify the expense when for less money you can usually design your own piece which will be yours.

black lacquer table setThis is a set of three black lacquered tables that we created for a client.  Side tables are perfect for a living room where people like to entertain because of their flexibility and mobility.  Increasingly designers and clients are asking us to create a pair or a set of three side tables because they are easy to integrate into an apartment, especially in New York City where space is always a consideration.  These tables measure 18″l x 18″d and 15″ h and can be used separately when needed or stacked one on top of the other like in the picture.

Pictured above is a custom art deco side table we created last summer.  The client saw another dining table (below) we were selling and wanted a similar tabletop created with a diamond shape in the middle and two other wood grains surrounding it, but with an Art Deco style base. There are many different interpretations of the Art Deco base and this particular design incorporates several variations.
