We had posted a while back on a beautiful Secretarie (last image below is original) built in 1905 by Austrian designer Josef Hoffman. A client in Brussels loved the desk and hired us to build one. Below are the photos of our version. It is solid oak with a cerused gray finish.

CERUSED OAK DINING TABLE

By | October 17th, 2011|all, Ceruse finish, Contemporary, Designs, Dining Space, Dining Tables, Tables|

A cerused finish is created by using an open grain wood such as oak and applying a base stain of one color (gray/green stain) and a paste filler of a different color (white filler).  Solid white oak is the best wood to use when creating a custom piece of furniture where the client wants the highest quality cerused two-tone finish. White oak is an open grain hardwood known for being very durable, strong with a fine texture and is more expensive than red oak.

This 14′ custom dining table is made out of solid white oak wood with a cerused finish. We built this custom table for a client in CT over the summer. Often when building a dining table over 8′ long,  extension leaves for the table top are optional, but for this project the client requested a one piece table top. The gray/green color was custom made to match a color sample provided by the client and the cerused finish was selected/specified before production began.  To read more about the types and characteristics of oak wood visit: http://www.craftsman-style.info/finishing/063-oak.htm.

Pictured is a solid white oak coffee table we created in our studio. The design/style was based on the gray Cerused coffee table featured on our website.  The simplicity of this coffee table makes it the perfect element that can be incorporated in the design of a clean contemporary  or a rustic home.  The last image illustrates some of the finish options we offer for the light ceruse option.

CERUSED OAK DESK BY JOSEF HOFFMAN

By | August 2nd, 2011|all, Art Nouveau, Ceruse finish, Desks, Josef Hoffmann|

This is an oak desk with a dark ceruse finish created by Joseph Hoffman in 1905. Oak wood is the most popular wood option for cerused finish because of the grain and its porous quality.  This desk has a dark stain solid oak with white filler and is a recent addition to our antique collection.  Hoffman’s favorite geometrical forms included squares and rectangles for his designs.

CERUSE OAK FINISH

By | July 21st, 2011|all, Ceruse finish|

Ceruse oak finish is a common finish option in a wide range of interior styles. The ceruse finish look is achieved by opening the grain of the oak wood and filling it with a filler. The variety of colors and tones is extensive since the finish can be incorporated into almost any color palette. The wood color could be stained as well as the wood filler. Here is a picture of some of our ceruse oak finish options.
