CERUSED OAK DESK BY JOSEF HOFFMAN

By | August 2nd, 2011|all, Art Nouveau, Ceruse finish, Desks, Josef Hoffmann|

This is an oak desk with a dark ceruse finish created by Joseph Hoffman in 1905. Oak wood is the most popular wood option for cerused finish because of the grain and its porous quality.  This desk has a dark stain solid oak with white filler and is a recent addition to our antique collection.  Hoffman’s favorite geometrical forms included squares and rectangles for his designs.

ART NOUVEAU STYLE

By | June 19th, 2011|all, Art Nouveau|

Art Nouveau was considered the most fashionable style by the turn of the nineteenth century. It’s organic elements with clean curves and linear forms have inspired and influenced furniture, design, architecture, sculpture, jewelry and paintings. The Tessel House in Brussels by Victor Horta is an outstanding example of Art Nouveau architecture. Here the staircase, wall decorations, mosaic floors, lighting, furniture and architecture were designed together with a new vision focused on  nature and the female form

Art Nouveau side chair

art nouveau side chair

This is a current project in the works for a client in Paris, a set of matching Art Nouveau side chairs. Often interior designers will provide us with photos or sketches of the piece they are looking to create, this is the representation we were presented with. There will be several modifications to the chair including the fabric and finish. The organic shapes in Art Nouveau pieces often were inspired by plant forms, incorporating a sense of movement and harmony within the organic curves. Art Nouveau style is a key period in the evolution of the historical styles bridging the neoclassical and modern periods. Over time the Art Nouveau period expanded the inspirational elements it drew designs and organic forms incorporating seaweed, grass and even insects. These natural forms often were incorporated into elaborate inlays but the main component was in the overall structure.
