Greek custom chairs

Ancient Greek furniture is known for its elegance and timeless look and has been influential in later periods including 18th century neoclassical, revival, and through to present furniture designs. The few pieces of Greek furniture that survived are made out of bronze, marble and picture designs in Greek vases.  Wood was the dominant material utilized in creating Greek furniture and the finest furniture pieces had inlays of ivory, ebony and precious stones. Pictured to the left is a set of custom dining chairs inspired by the ancient Greek chairs. The rail back has a gilded anthemion pattern also known as a honeysuckle ornament.

Gilded mirror restoration

By | September 12th, 2010|Antique Restoration NYC, Empire, Mirrors, SERVICES, STYLES|

gilded mirror restoration Antique gilded mirrors and frames often have broken pieces due to natural wear and tear that need to be re-attached, restored and re-gilded.  For more elaborate mirrors and frames, usually we need to create or recreate missing decorative motifs such as acanthus leaves, palmettes, and often the heads and bodies of cherubs.  This rectangular Empire gilded mirror is symmetrical and features a pediment framed by classical columns on both sides and the base.

Handmade custom dining set

custom dining table set

For this project the client provided an original chair and we created a dining table that featured some of the hand carved elements of the chair. We incorporated the rosettes from the top of the legs of the chair onto the feet of the table.  Also the lyre on the back of the chair was replicated on the underside of the table where the legs meet.  Further design elements include the unique rounded edges on the table to accentuate the curved elements of the chair.  This table pictured is not yet finished but it’s essential to also match the finishes, in this case with gilded gold motifs and an overall dark hand polished finish.

American Empire chairs

american_empire_swang_chairThis delicate chair created in the American Empire style is one of two chair we created for a client’s living room. They have swans carved up over the top rail of each side and turned legs. The carving in American Empire furniture tends to be less decorative in favor of a smoother surface highlighting the rich grain, usually mahogany, of various fine veneers. American Empire Chairs vary between open backed and upholstered. Furniture created during the American Empire often incorporates animal motifs and was inspired by the French Empire style, while keeping the clean, straight lines from the Neoclassical period. It’s a classic style that clients often want to incorporate in their space designs.
