Ancient Greek klismos chairs

This Grecian style chair is one of a set of four chairs that were inspired by the forms of the Greek klismos.  Located at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, the set of four chairs is a recreation of a large original dining set that was created for a suite in James Madison’s White House and that were lost in a fire in 1820.

KLISMOS CHAIR

Here is another version of a Klismos chair brought into our studio for production.  The client likes the shape but would like a new fabric and another matching chair for a set. Having an original is always the best, however not always possible.

This version of the Klismos, especially the seatback is quite popular and looks great in a number of different of variations.  We’ve done several klismos chairs over the years including this ebonized version and here is an extended discussion on it with several other variations.

KLISMOS DINING CHAIR

The Klismos chair was a design that really stretched the boundaries of contemporary furniture design. In the first photo the only part of the chair that is straight is the seated portion, every other element has a curve of some kind. The second photo illustrates the design we came up with for the Klismos, When searching for Klismos chairs there are numerous variations, the chair we designed is a combination of a Klismos design by Belvedere Antiques (photo 3) and another by John Fowler Antiques (photo 4). The dining chair still retains much of the smooth curves of the other designs but has a more functional, modern style. We often find that clients love elements of classic styles like the Greek Klismos but want to put their own stamp on the design to create something not seen anywhere else, and therefore retaining both its value and originality.

Greek custom chairs

Ancient Greek furniture is known for its elegance and timeless look and has been influential in later periods including 18th century neoclassical, revival, and through to present furniture designs. The few pieces of Greek furniture that survived are made out of bronze, marble and picture designs in Greek vases.  Wood was the dominant material utilized in creating Greek furniture and the finest furniture pieces had inlays of ivory, ebony and precious stones. Pictured to the left is a set of custom dining chairs inspired by the ancient Greek chairs. The rail back has a gilded anthemion pattern also known as a honeysuckle ornament.
