Twisted rope legs

One of the lesser incorporated aspects into new custom furniture is the carved twisted
rope legs seen on furniture from various periods beginning in the 17th century onward.
One reason is the skill required to carve smooth twists which accurately follow the
wood grain while also looking like a matching set. This is another tell tale sign your furniture
maker/ designer may not be a master craftsman; the ability to integrate natural looking
twists into a piece of furniture. Another level of complexity is if a secondary or
alternate twist is added to an existing twist. There are many aspects to creating furniture which
can be faked, this is definitely not one of them. There is a good introductory article here on
how to get started creating the carved rope twists. Below is a custom bench
we created incorporating the twists into the legs.
