This is a beautiful lacquered and beech armchair by famed Irish designer Eileen Gray (designed 1917-1919) which recently was bid on up to 1.7 million at the Christie’s auction on December 13th in Manhattan.   Christie’s further added to the description that the chair has a “velvet seat and a signature mermaid motif on its back.  Ms Gray made it for her close personal friend and rumoured lover, a French singer called Damia”. Last year another chair by Eileen Gray (called Fauteil aux Dragon’s, or The Dragon’s Chair) sold in Paris for 29 million, part of Yves Saint Laurent’s collection.  Often designers seek us out to create or incorporate elements from these beautiful inspiration pieces.  There are a combination of styles present in this chair which make it both iconic and timeless, the straight round legs seems to be influenced by African furniture, the black lacquer and linear form give it a federal feel, the mermaids are delicate and completely original and the velvet seat adds a nice touch of elegance.
