HAND CARVED DOORS

By | November 23rd, 2010|all, Doors, Living Space, ROOM|

We designed and created a set of hand carved doors for a client with a townhouse in the West Village. There were three doors total, each with 56 separate carved pieces on each side (112 per door).  To give you an idea of the labor involved in creating one of these doors, each hand carved wood piece (if the carver is experienced and efficient) takes about one hour.

Doors represent one of the most under utilized and often overlooked design elements of a space. Often a client finishes a space and by the time they are ready to shut the door they are psycologically finished. However the door represents both the entrance and exit, and is often the first and last thing you see. While many will spend countless hours deciding which front door to put on their house, apartment or brownstone, often other doors get overlooked. The carving on a door can simply be trim added along the outer edges, or it could replace an old outdated looking window, or the carving can fill the entire door. The options are endless, and the hand carved door can authenticate a particular style as well as augment the exisiting design elements in a space. While they can be seen adorning the facades of many buildings, apartments and houses throughout Europe, the hand carved doors are less prevalent in the United States.
