This is a pair of T. H. Robsjohn Gibbings white lacquer dressers that will be the inspiration for a custom AV cabinet for the master bedroom of a client. The new AV cabinet will feature four front doors. Often when we build custom furniture for clients it’s a piece designed to fit into a larger set. Usually the complementary furniture piece is difficult or impossible to find, or perhaps the wrong size. The furniture of Robsjohn Gibbings is a popular design influence for many of our clients and elements are incorporated into our own custom collection.
Custom, modular lacquer furniture is popular in New York City especially because of the range of sizes rooms have in apartments, coops, brownstones and lofts. Hallways or different areas in interiors can often accommodate narrow consoles perhaps with drawers, lacquer benches with storage inside, nightstands or center tables. One of the issues with much of the contemporary lacquer furniture (that include storage options) found in stores that mass produce it by machine is it comes in standard sizes and tends to have a utilitarian feel. Custom lacquer handmade furniture looks much different. It is similar to comparing a black lacquer steinway grand piano to a machine made casio keyboard. Everything from the durability to flexibility to resale value should be considered.
There are the types of finish (matte, semi gloss, high gloss), hardware, etc. to consider as well.
